Syllabus of Senior Chinese Language & Literature

Instructor: Dr. ZHU Chongke

Email: zhuchk@mail.sysu.edu.cn

Purpose: This course is among core courses of liberal arts education. In order to keep the students of non-Chinese department to have a chance to enhance themselves on both Chinese literature and culture, we open this course and hope it can act as such a good mediator instead of grasping a new vocabulary tediously.

Style: lectures + discussions. Since there are so many students in our class, I have give more lectures. Thus we can only have two discussions. One is on the famous cinema: Chinese Odyssey (Da Hua Xi You), the other is on Mu Zimei’s sex diary.

Contents:

1. Introduction. Including this course and a brief history of Chinese literature.

2. ShiJing and Chinese poems.

3. Lun Yu by Confucius.

4. Shi Ji by Sima Qian and tradition of chronicle writing style.

5. Wei Jin culture and literature.

6. History of Ancient Chinese Fiction.

7. Traditional Drama of Yuan & Ming dynasty.

8. Lu Xun and his fiction.

9. Modern Essays.

10. Popular literature and culture.

Exam: all of you must attend an exam and also you are encouraged to submit two essays on your discussions. Attendance and essays will occupy 30 percent of your general scores.
